I was in the show this week so I went to the writers’ meeting to generate some material. And out of that came this idea for a sketch about the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination, which I co-wrote with our director Adam Campbell-Schmitt and one of our top writers, Sean Tierney. I was backstage so I didn’t hear how great the audience response was until I watched the video – and I was really happy with the results!
Shannon Ayers’ last show as a member of the Top Story! Weekly cast gave me one last chance to write a sketch to showcase her great Jennifer Aniston impression!!
TS!W 720: JENNIFER ANISTON’S SUMMER MOVIE PREVIEW by Michael Hughes
As I mentioned in my last post, our special Super Bowl Sunday episode of Top Story! Weekly had just three actors, so we did a “Grill the Candidates” format, where Mike McLendon and Kipleigh Brown questioned each of the four remaining Republican candidates, all played by Phillip Wilburn. We took question ideas from our writers, then assigned each of the four candidates to a specific writer to write a segment. I did the Gingrich one (although the rules were written by Matt Blitz).
I’m always telling the cast of “Top Story! Weekly” to be proactive in generating material to showcase themselves. So on the rare occasions when I’m in the cast, I’d be a hypocrite not to take my own advice, right? So with the premiere of Kelsey Grammer’s new show on Starz, “Boss,” I thought I’d have some fun with my competent impersonation of the star of “Frasier.” I’m not mortified with the results, which for me is a win!
We put our scripts together on Friday nights. And on Friday night, June 24, the New York State Senate was voting on gay marriage. Clearly it was a story we’d have to address in Top Story! Weekly if it passed. Originally, I wrote this sketch so that famous New Yorkers were urging the Senate to vote in favor of gay marriage. But as I was finalizing the script, the bill passed, so I changed it to a more celebratory sketch, which worked much better. But the real highlight of this sketch is the showcase of our cast’s awesome impersonations. I looked at who we had that week, thought of who they could do, and the results were awesome. The audience applause got louder with every entrance.
I love writing sketches designed for particular actors in the Top Story! Weekly cast – so when I saw the story about Jennifer Aniston’s stalker Jason Peyton, I knew it would be a great chance to write a sketch for Shannon Ayers’ awesome Aniston impersonation!
Jennifer Aniston may have found a new man – her stalker!
