Hey! It’s been a while! But when our show’s most loyal fan, Herb Koss, celebrated his 80th birthday a few days before our March 9th show I knew we had to do something to address it. Brian Vestal does an absolutely amazing characterization of Herb here – even if you don’t know him, you’ll really enjoy it!!
Trying to figure out how to get comedy out of last week’s big story – the death of Steve Jobs – it dawned on me that the way to approach it would be to focus on what happened at Apple the day before: the underwhelming launch of the new iPhone 4S. The audience reaction isn’t huge in this video – it was the opening sketch, and I think they were warming up – but I think it’s a pretty solid effort. After all, references to hoverboards are always funny.
My friend Matt Moore and I have a Christmas week tradition of watching “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” together. When the so-called “snowpocalypse” struck the East Coast after Christmas, and I realized I had two cast members in Top Story! Weekly who really could pull off Steve Martin and John Candy…well, there was no way I couldn’t write this sketch!
The “snowpocalypse” striking the East Coast right before New Year’s Eve may strand two travelers together – just like they were in a classic movie comedy from the ’80’s!

PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES II by Michael Hughes – from Top Story! Weekly Episode 83: “It Goes to ’11”
Any time I can find a reason to write for one of the Top Story! Weekly cast‘s recurring characters it’s fun. When the cast member is Artemis Pebdani and the recurring character is Kim Jong-Il, it’s a blast!
So a little fun with a lot of cursing. And the star of a big hit show is in this one too!!!
Now that the FCC rules barring profanity and indecency have been loosened by a court hearing, two NBC execs have a plan to boost the network’s f’in’ low ratings!

PROUD AS A PEACOCK by Michael Hughes – from Top Story! Weekly Episode 61: “There Will Be True Blood”
I didn’t write this sketch – but i directed it, and it’s a great one so I’m posting it here so more people can see it. It’s from Sunday night’s Top Story! Weekly, where our special guest was Jim Parrack, who plays Hoyt Fortenberry on HBO’s “True Blood.” To see all of Jim’s sketches, just follow this link.
When Jim Parrack of HBO’s “True Blood” visits a school to talk about his show, he’s surprised to find out he’s not addressing high school students but third graders!
