Watch “TS!W 720: Herb Koss’ 80th Birthday from Top Story! Weekly Episode 240: “Crimea River”!

March 13, 2014

Hey! It’s been a while! But when our show’s most loyal fan, Herb Koss, celebrated his 80th birthday a few days before our March 9th show I knew we had to do something to address it. Brian Vestal does an absolutely amazing characterization of Herb here – even if you don’t know him, you’ll really enjoy it!!

Watch “Healthcare.Gov Is A Real Scandal” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 223: “ERROR 404: Healthcare Not Found”

November 2, 2013

This sketch didn’t go quite as well as I hoped – I don’t think the audience was that familiar with “Scandal,” and some of the dialogue wasn’t as precise as it needed to be – but I do love watching Grasie Mercedes play Olivia Pope!

Watch “Fire, Ready, Aim” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 167: “Shoot First, Aim Later”

Mitt Romney’s jump-the-gun response to the attack on the Libyan consulate in Benghazi got me thinking: what if he was the sheriff coming in to clean up an Old West town? Here’s what I came up with. Mike Besaw did a great job with the sound effects on this one. And I like how Mike McLendon’s character’s name is a shout-out to his Harold team.

FIRE, READY, AIM by Michael Hughes

Starring Phillip Wilburn (Mitt Romney), John Druska (Bullock), Tammie Smalls (Annie), Gregg Lopez (Pappy), Kipleigh Brown (Kitty), Tommy Bechtold (Dutch), Mike McLendon (Bandit) and Matt Moore (Scoop Henderson)

Watch “L-I-T-T-L-E B” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 153: “Zombie Apocalypse”!

June 7, 2012

It felt a little weird to do a sketch about a six-year-old girl. But the contestant in the National Spelling Bee was in the news – and the chance to have some fun with that character as played by Artemis Pebdani was just too tempting! I think it came out pretty fun – especially as part of our big Los Angeles Improv Comedy Festival show with Bill Burr!!

Watch “El Alcalde Es Occupado” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 129: “Maybe Cain Isn’t Able”!!

December 7, 2011

Mayor Villaraigosa negotiates the end of the “Occupy L.A.” protests the same week that Top Story! Weekly has Neil Garguilo (Principal Cox from MTV’s “Awkward” and iO West‘s Dr. God, and one of our regular cast members as well) in the cast? That makes it time to revisit one of our favorite recurring sketches – the telenovela with Los Angeles’ Mayor, “El Alcalde de la Pasion!!”

Watch “Work Safe” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 113: “AAA Gets Towed Away”

August 10, 2011

Without question the edgiest sketch I’ve written in a while. If you don’t know about the Dreamboard case, count your blessings. If you do, you might be surprised to think I’d write a comedy sketch about it. But with the chance to write for Peter Fluet – who I know well from our days in “Those Who Oppose Us Will Stand Knee Deep in the Blood of Their Children” – I had an idea that I thought would work without being tasteless. I think we pulled it off. Everyone in this sketch is just great. (And yes, this sketch is work safe. Although Peter does get loud.)

Watch “Credit Where Credit Is Due” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 111: “On a Hot Tin Debt Ceiling”

August 4, 2011

For the first time in a long time, I was an actor in Top Story! Weekly on July 20. And I was even in a sketch I wrote for myself, a fun little piece about the debt ceiling nonsense in which I was ably assisted by Deanna Russo and John Druska.

Starring John Druska (Mr. Miller), Deanna Russo (Carla) and Michael Hughes (Gary)
