Watch “Justin Bieber Turns 19” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 189: “Sequester? I Don’t Even Care About Her!”

March 5, 2013

When Justin Bieber hosted “Saturday Night Live” about a month ago, Tillery Johnson happened to be in the cast of Top Story! Weekly that week. And since Tillery bears an uncanny resemblence to Biebs I wrote a sketch about the afterparty with Justin indulging in the pot and sizzurp and naked butt Instagramming of which he seems to have been so fond lately. It didn’t make it in that week, although I got good feedback. But when Till was in the show again the weekend of Biebs’ 19th birthday, I resubmitted it – this time, with the addition of Brian Vestal’s awesome Mark Wahlberg (who had just been in the show a few minutes earlier). Enjoy!

Watch “Top Story! Weekly Presents: Oscar Stories: “Beasts of the Southern Wild””!

February 23, 2013

This year Top Story! Weekly made a series of behind-the-scenes videos about each of the nine Best Picture nominees. The series is called “Oscar Stories” and they came out really, really well. You can watch all nine here. My contribution was this bit about the on-set tutor for Quvenzhan√© Wallis from “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”

Watch “Genital Hospital” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 185: “Super Bowled Over!”

February 5, 2013

We all wish Ron Jeremy a swift recovery from his heart aneurysm. Of course, the prospect of the most famous male porn star ever going into an emergency room did have comic possibilities. Matt Epstein and I both wrote on this. Most of this sketch is Matt’s – “pantsectomy” is mine and a few other things. It is really funny, though, since the cast totally committed to it.

Watch “Cut4Whoever” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 182: “I’d Like to Give That Whore a Rusty Trombone!”

January 16, 2013

Whattya know? After two months I finally get a sketch in Top Story! Weekly again!

Our writing staff is so good that I hadn’t been able to get a sketch in since November. But when Brian O’Connell guest directed I knew I could try to go a little dark. And when the story (which turned out to be a fake) about Justin Bieber fans cutting themselves to try to get him to stop smoking pot, I knew I had just the right angle!

Starring Tommy Bechtold (Sean), Kipleigh Brown (Mom), Phillip Wilburn (Dad) and Mitchel Baldwin (Jack)

Watch “Game Changer” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 170: “Round One: Mitt”!

October 9, 2012

Watching Obama’s performance in last Wednesday’s debate wasn’t easy for me. But I still had to get comedy out of it. And thinking about how the same Republicans who were abandoning Romney the day before suddenly rallied around him, I thought about what might happened if those closest to Romney let slip how they had felt about his chances.

Starring Phillip Wilburn (Mitt Romney), Kipleigh Brown (Ann Romney), Blake Walker (Paul Ryan) and Jared Nigro (Tagg Romney)

Directed by Artemis Pebdani

Watch “Fire, Ready, Aim” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 167: “Shoot First, Aim Later”

September 20, 2012

Mitt Romney’s jump-the-gun response to the attack on the Libyan consulate in Benghazi got me thinking: what if he was the sheriff coming in to clean up an Old West town? Here’s what I came up with. Mike Besaw did a great job with the sound effects on this one. And I like how Mike McLendon’s character’s name is a shout-out to his Harold team.

FIRE, READY, AIM by Michael Hughes

Starring Phillip Wilburn (Mitt Romney), John Druska (Bullock), Tammie Smalls (Annie), Gregg Lopez (Pappy), Kipleigh Brown (Kitty), Tommy Bechtold (Dutch), Mike McLendon (Bandit) and Matt Moore (Scoop Henderson)

Watch “Downton Romney” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 158: “You’re So Bain!”

July 17, 2012

I had wanted for a while to do a “Downton Abbey” parody with Mitt Romney, but I hadn’t been able to figure out an angle. But when I read about the incredibly elitist and out-of-town comments his supporters made outside his Hamptons fundraisers, I knew I had it. And when the Bain Capital allegations blew up over the past few days, the sketch provided a means to address those stories as well. I was happy about a lot with this sketch – especially the audience’s instant recognition of the “smoking and plotting” O’Brien and Thomas.

Watch “Rock of Middle Ages” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 155: “Sports, Sports, Sports, Sports”

The premiere of “Rock of Ages” let us have some fun with the idea of Tom Cruise, rock star – and more fun with some other things about Tom!

Watch “L-I-T-T-L-E B” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 153: “Zombie Apocalypse”!

June 7, 2012

It felt a little weird to do a sketch about a six-year-old girl. But the contestant in the National Spelling Bee was in the news – and the chance to have some fun with that character as played by Artemis Pebdani was just too tempting! I think it came out pretty fun – especially as part of our big Los Angeles Improv Comedy Festival show with Bill Burr!!

Watch “Hummer Nights” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 150: “Obama Comes Out”!!!

May 16, 2012

When the story of John Travolta being accused of sexually harassing masseurs broke, Matt Manser suggested a he said/he said song parody would be in order. And since probably the most famous song from “Grease” fit the bill, I went to work. There’s a couple of line flubs, but there’s some stuff I’m really proud of – especially the perfect scan of “John Travolta” to “Summer Lovin'” in the opening lines, and the “Look Who’s Talking” reference.

HUMMER NIGHTS by Michael Hughes

Starring Brent Pope (Okorie Okorocha), Gregg Lopez (Masseur #1), Tillery Johnson (Masseur #2), Phillip Wilburn (John Travolta), Blake Walker (Man #1), Josh Rachford (Man #2) Kipleigh Brown (Woman #1), Deanna Russo (Woman #2), Jen Cain (Crowd) and Tammie Smalls (Crowd)
