One of my all-time favorite recurring sketches in Top Story! Weekly is “El Alcalde de la Pasión,” where we depict L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa as the star of a telenovela who is consumed with….PASSION! We haven’t been able to do it in quite some time since Neil Garguilo – who indelibly plays El Alcalde (and is one of my favorite people to write for in the world – in fact, who just plain is one of my favorite people in the world) – hasn’t been available on Sunday in a while. Fortunately, he was available this past Sunday – and with the layoffs hitting the LAUSD, the opportunity to make El Alcalde hot for teacher was too good to pass up!
Unfortunately the video quality’s not as good as usual – but you can still enjoy the awesome work done by our special guest, Nicholas D’Agosto from “Heroes,” “Fired Up”, “Election” and the forthcoming “From Prada to Nada” and “Final Destination 5!”
Unfortunately the sound is crappy on this one – the substitute video guy didn’t set up a mic near the stage – but you can still enjoy some fun work by our cast, including Nicholas D’Agosto, who you might know as West Rosen from “Heroes” and from starring in “Fired Up” and the forthcoming “From Prada to Nada” and “Final Destination 5”!
The California budget crisis means Jerry Brown is making state employees give up their cell phones – and a lot of other state perks that seem to be synonymous with being from California!

CALIFORNIA CUTTIN’ by Michael Hughes – from Top Story! Weekly Episode 85: “The Age of Ophiuchus”
You’ve seen Nicholas D’Agosto in movies like “Election” and “Fired Up” and on TV shows like “Heroes” and “The Office.” You can see him later this year starring in “Final Destination 5” and “From Prada to Nada” and in the new USA Network drama series “Eden.” And this Sunday, January 16 at 9, you can see him on the iO West Mainstage as he guest stars in an brand-new edition of LA’s best news-based sketch comedy show, Top Story! Weekly!
And if that’s not enough, our guest standup this week has appeared on shows like “The Late Late Show,” “Outsourced,” “Last Comic Standing,” “Comedy Central’s Premium Blend” and even “The Closer” – Tom Clark!
So don’t miss Nick, Tom and the rest of the Top Story! Weekly cast in an all-new show – named by CBS 2 in their “Best of Los Angeles” – based as always on the events of the past seven days!
A scheduling mixup means that the Barnes and Noble at LA’s Grove has two “great” authors for a book signing at the same time – Snooki and George W. Bush!!
Justin Bieber’s on “CSI” this Thursday?!!! Thanks, comedy gods! Now Top Story! Weekly has a chance to bring out Horatio Caine while having some fun at the expense of America’s (and Canada’s) top teen idol!!
Justin Bieber is guest starring on “CSI” – but was his performance on the MTV Video Music Awards to die for? Las Vegas and Miami team up to find out!

JUSTIN BIEBER ON CSI by Michael Hughes – from Top Story! Weekly Episode 70: “The Delaware Destroyer”
We have a lot of fun in Top Story! Weekly with Phillip Wilburn‘s characterization of Captain Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger – so much fun that we had just done a Sully sketch the previous week when the JetBlue/Steven Slater story broke. But when Aires Flight 8250 crashed and all but one passenger survived…well, the temptation to go back to the Sully well was just too strong. And I’m glad I did since this sketch turned out really well. And fun fact: the real-life sister of the actor who plays the reporter who ID’s Sully was actually on Flight 1549!
The pilot who saved 130 lives when he crash landed Aires Flight 8250 on the Colombian island of San Andrés is hailed as a hero – except by a certain other hero pilot who crash landed a plane into the Hudson River to save 155 people’s lives!
