Watch “Soul Campaign” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 134: “Not-So-Good Vibrations!”

January 28, 2012

As we finished up our readthrough Thursday night for Top Story! Weekly, we realized we didn’t have a particularly strong political sketch for that week’s show. Then we saw the video from that night of President Obama singing at the Apollo Theater:

And from there, writing the Republican candidates singing their own versions of 70’s soul hits became pretty easy. All the actors really nailed this one.

SOUL CAMPAIGN by Michael Hughes

Starring Matthew Harris (Barack Obama), Brian Vestal (Mitt Romney), Brent Pope (Newt Gingrich), Phillip Wilburn (Rick Perry) and Sean Cowhig (Announcer)

Directed by Michael Hughes

Watch “Pardon Me!” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 133: “The Bain of Mitt’s Existence”

January 18, 2012

When I sent this sketch, based on the whole Haley Barbour pardon kerfuffle, in to Top Story! Weekly, I didn’t think much of it, but to my surprise it made the show. And a rewrite by Kristina Adelmeyer made it better. It’s still too long, but a return appearance by Derek Reid’s Rapey Raperson (first seen in this pirate sketch with Parvesh Cheena, which you should check out), made it worthwhile.

PARDON ME by Michael Hughes and Kristina Adelmeyer

Starring Phillip Wilburn (Haley Barbour), Jen Cain (Alice), Sean Cowhig (Warren), Kipleigh Brown (Lucinda), Derek Reid (Rapey Raperson) and Matthew Harris (O.J. Simpson)

Watch “Words with Alec” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 130: “Leaving a Jet Plane”

December 14, 2011

The Alec Baldwin “Words with Friends” incident was almost a self-parody, so this sketch is pretty straightforward. Fun fact: Sean Cowhig was actually tweeting while on stage.

WORDS WITH ALEC by Michael Hughes

Starring Phillip Wilburn (Alec Baldwin), Kipleigh Brown (Stacy), Artemis Pebdani (Gwen), James Warfield (Pilot), Jimmy Guidish (Passenger) and Sean Cowhig (Passenger)

Directed by Tom Repetto

Watch “Occupy Greendale!” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 128: “Out-Regis!”

November 24, 2011

Last Tuesday my Facebook news feed blew up with people commenting on a news story. Occupy Wall Street? The elections? Syria or Egypt? No – the decision by NBC to take “Community” off its schedule. Thus I was inspired for this sketch – and thanks to Wikipedia for filling in the gaps in my “Community” knowledge!

OCCUPY GREENDALE! by Michael Hughes

Starring Grasie Mercedes (Karen), Damien Fahey (Sam), Christopher Biewer (Jack) and Sean Cowhig (Mark)

Directed by Michael Hughes

Watch “Photo Finish” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 114: “Anarchy in the UK”

August 17, 2011

Boy, having Michele Bachmann in the presidential race is making things fun! Especially since Kipleigh Brown does such an awesome characterization! Throw in Sean Cowhig’s hilarious Marcus Bachmann, Brian O’Connell as the photographer and that crazy Newsweek cover, and this one was easy to write!

Starring Kipleigh Brown (Michele Bachmann), Sean Cowhig (Marcus Bachmann) and Brian O’Connell (Chris Buck)

Watch “The Unfriendly Skies” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 113: “AAA Gets Towed Away!”

August 11, 2011

My other sketch from this past week’s show, about the FAA shutdown. I’m happy, among other things, that it gave Peter Fluet the chance to reprise a classic line from the old Big News show: “Hot coffee! Cold milk! Warm half and half!”

THE UNFRIENDLY SKIES by Michael Hughes

Starring Phillip Wilburn (John Boehner), James Warfield (John Mica), Kipleigh Brown (Sandra), Jen Cain (Debbie), Peter Fluet (Captain Edwards) and Sean Cowhig (Co-Captain Robertson)

Watch “Moneygall for Nothing” from Top Story! Weekly Episode 104: “Rehab Has Them Now”

June 1, 2011

So after I wrote this sketch, I realized it had the same basic construct as the “Schwarzenegger meets his illegitimate son” sketch I wrote last week: a politician’s mannerisms, speaking patterns and tropes are mirrored unexpectedly by someone related to him. But the sketch came out well, and the audience dug it, and I don’t think most of them were at last week’s show anyway. Plus, I wrote a sketch about Ireland that wasn’t about drinking and potatoes and sexual frustration.

MONEYGALL FOR NOTHING by Michael Hughes

Starring Matthew Harris (Barack Obama), Sean Cowhig (Enda Kenny), Phillip Wilburn (Henry Healy), Kipleigh Brown (Colleen), Tommy Bechtold (Seamus) and Christopher Biewer (Ollie Hayes)

Celebrity Public Service Announcements to Help Japan After the Earthquake and Tsunami – from Top Story Weekly Episode 93: “Shock Wave” – with special guest Deanna Russo!

March 21, 2011

Let’s say you run a comedy show based on the news. Right after you read all the sketches submitted for the week and you’re putting together a running order, you learn about a huge tragedy striking. It’s a big story – you can’t ignore it. But you have to be funny without being disrespectful. What do you do?

If you’re me, and you’re trying to address the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, you ask your friends Matt Blitz and Phillip Wilburn to help write a sketch that uses the event to make fun of celebrities who are deserving of the ridicule. All in all, it turned out pretty well.

HERE TO HELP by Michael Hughes, Matt Blitz and Phillip Wilburn

Starring Christopher Biewer (Matt), Kipleigh Brown (Caroline), Brent Pope (Larry), Deanna Russo (Lindsay Lohan), Sean Cowhig (Christian Bale), Tommy Bechtold (Ricky Gervais) and Phillip Wilburn (Charlie Sheen)

Directed by Michael Hughes

Newt Gingrich Has Advice About Committing Adultery – from Top Story! Weekly Episode 93: “Shock Wave”

March 19, 2011

Yes, Newt Gingrich actually blamed the fact that he cheated on his wife on the fact that he loved America too much. So that proved a perfect topic for comedy with our guest star, Deanna Russo from “Knight Rider!”

FOR LOVE OF…COUNTRY by Michael Hughes

Starring Deanna Russo (Cathy), Sean Cowhig (Ben) and Tommy Bechtold (Newt Gingrich)

Directed by Michael Hughes
